- The tissue which grows inside the uterus during pregnancy and links the baby to the mother comment: the vascular system of the fetus is not directly connected to that of the mother. the placenta allows an exchange of oxygen and nutrients to be passed from the mother to the fetus to which she is linked by the umbilical cord. it stops functioning when the baby breathes for the first time and is then passed out of the uterus as the afterbirth.
