Magnetic compass

  1. The most common liquid-type compass, capable of calibration to compensate for magnetic influences within the aircraft.

  2. Магнитный компас

  3. Буссоль, магнитный компас

  4. A compass using a magnetic needle or card which points in the direction of the north magnetic pole. the “flux-gate” version enhances its features by employing small coils of wire wound around a magnetic core to directly sense the horizontal component of the earth‘s magnetic field, providing readings in electronic form that can be digitized and used by an autopilot for course correction. readout may also be analogue. the principle of magnetism was known in china as early as the third century bce, and the compass itself was probably invented there during the ninth century of the current era. its use for navigation is first mentioned by zhu yu in 1119; “the navigator knows the geography, he watches the stars at night, watches the sun at day (but) when it is dark and cloudy, he watches the compass.” seventy years later, the compass had appeared in europe but it is unclear whether it was transferred from china or invented independently. the latter is likely because european instruments used a different number of compass points, and the needle indicated north, whereas the chinese version pointed south. in an unusual reverse direction of technology transfer, arabs—who call the instrument al-konbas—seem to have adopted the european design.

  7. An instrument employed by navigators to guide the ship`s course at sea. it consists of a circular box, containing a fly or paper card, which represents the horizon, and is suspended by two concentric rings called gimbals. the fly is divided into thirty-two equal parts, by lines drawn from the centre to the circumference, called points or rhumbs; the interval between the points is subdivided into 360 degrees—consequently, the distance or angle comprehended between any two rhumbs is equal to 11 degrees and 15 minutes. the four cardinal points lie opposite to each other; the north and south

Compass card, английский
  1. Картушка компаса

  2. A circular card, divided around its rim into the cardinal or inter-cardinal points of the compass, or into degrees. a lubber’s line on the fixed compass bowl is aligned to the bow, and hence its intersection with the card shows the vessel’s heading. to a shipboard observer the card seems to rotate when the vessel turns, but in fact it remains aligned to the north while the ship turns around it. also compass rose. almost without exception, the northward direction on a compass card is indicated by a fleur-de-lys—a stylized lily flower, formerly the emblem of french royalty. few mariners would be able to explain why, but the practice dates back to the twelfth century when the french called their water compasses “mariniere.” in 1258, the florentine brunetto latini wrote; “even as our august king is our guide on the land, so does the fleur-de-lys on the mariniere guide the seafarer by constantly pointing to boreas (the ancient greek god of the north wind) no matter how the ship may go.”
