Monsoon
|
- The term originally referred solely to the winds of the arabian sea which blow for about six months from the north-east (in winter) and for six months from the south-west (in summer), but now is also used for other marked seasonal winds. the rainy season associated with the south-west monsoon is termed "the monsoon" without reference to the wind.
- [1] refers to strong, often violent, wind systems that change direction with the season and are accompanied by heavy rains. monsoons blow from cold to warm regions because cold air takes up more space than warm air. they blow from the land toward the sea in winter, and from the sea toward land in summer. the name was derived from the arabic word mausim, referring to seasonal winds experienced in the arabian sea. [2] although primarily associated with southeast asia, the hydrological definition includes any major wind and rain system that changes direction seasonally.
