    1. Said of a material or compound derived from vegetable or animal life. organic architecture architecture whose design is established in accordance with processes of nature rather than based on an imposed design; a design philosophy of frank lloyd wright (1867–1959) based largely on his early- 20th-century assertion that a building (and its appearance) should follow forms that are in harmony with its natural environment. the materials used on the exterior should be sympathetic to the building’s locale, thereby relating the building to its setting, as if it were the result of natural growth. thus, use should be made of lowpitched overhanging roofs to provide protection from the sun in the summer and to provide some weather protection in the winter, and maximum use should be made of natural daylighting.

    2. Adj. pertaining to compounds containing carbon. also refers to living things or the materials made by living things. inorganic– ant.

    3. Pertaining to living organisms in general, to compounds formed by living organisms, and to the chemistry of compounds containing carbon.

    4. Refers to chemical structure based on the carbon atom, natural and synthetic.

    5. Designation of any chemical compound containing carbon (some of the simple compounds of carbon, such as carbon dioxide, are frequently classified as inorganic compounds). to date, nearly one million organic compounds have been synthesized or isolated. many occur in nature; others are produced by chemical synthesis.
