Organisation of petroleum exporting countries (opec)

    Opec is a permanent intergovernmental organisation, created in 1960, with the objective of co-ordinating and unifying petroleum prices among member states.

Purchasing managers' index (pmi), английский
    A monthly report by the chartered institute of purchasing and supply, the index is widely used by industrialised economies to assess business confidence. germany, japan and the uk use pmi surveys for both manufacturing and services industries. the numbers emerge from a series of questions regarding business activity, new business, employment, input prices, prices charged and business expectations. the measures are turned into indices, with a reading below 50% indicating declining economic activity, and a reading above 50% indicating an increase. it is a leading indicator of output growth.

The buying and selling of government securities on the financial markets. government sale of large amounts of gilt-edged securities will mean a transfer of funds from the private sector to the government. this happens as people buy securities and so have to write cheques or transfer money to the bank of england, which sold them. in consequence, the banks have fewer liquid funds available, and so are unable to expand their loans as quickly. selling gilt-edged securities is therefore considered to be a contractionary monetary policy.
