- The largest packet of data that can be transmitted on a network. mtu size varies, depending on the network—576 bytes on x.25 networks, for example, 1500 bytes on ethernet, and 17,914 bytes on 16 mbps token ring. responsibility for determining the size of the mtu lies with the link layer of the network. when packets are transmitted across networks, the path mtu, or pmtu, represents the smallest packet size (the one that all networks can transmit without breaking up the packet) among the networks involved.
