Privateer, английский
- A privately owned ship that has government permission during wartime to attack an enemy’s merchant ships.
- A privately owned ship authorised by a national power (by means of a #letter of marque) to conduct hostilities against an enemy. also called a private man of war.
- An armed vessel belonging to a private owner, and sailing under a commission of war or letter of marque issued by a belligerent state and authorizing it to commit hostile acts against an enemy. the term is also applied to the ship’s captain and individual members of its crew. privateering is no longer permissible under international law.
