- A straight-grained timber beam, or iron bar, fitted into or round the head of the rudder, by means of which the latter is moved. ( see helm.)
- A horizontal bar attached to the rudderhead and used to steer the vessel. as the size of sailing warships increased, the power needed to control the rudder became excessive and a helm (or wheel) was used to move the tiller with the mechanical advantage of a steering mechanism of ropes and pulleys. when this mechanism suffered battle damage, the tiller had to be moved manually and even with tackles the effort was prodigious. it took thirty men heaving to port and the same number to starboard to turn the rudder of a first-rate such as hms victory. see also steering evolution.
