A short, large-bore cannon, designed to lob projectiles at high angles so that they drop almost vertically to break through decks, roofs, etc. in the age of sail, mortars were the only naval ordnance to fire explosive shells rather than solid shot. it was considered dangerous to have large stocks of shells on board and, moreover, below-deck reinforcing supports for mortar platforms occupied most potential magazine space, so bomb vessels were usually accompanied by an ammunition tender. moses’ law: a punishment under pirate law, sentencing the miscreant to thirty-nine lashes on the bare back. presumably the reference was to the 40 days moses spent fasting in the wilderness before receiving the ten commandments, but why the last stroke was withheld is unclear.
