A thread made from part of the intestines of sheep, now usually artificially hardened, used to sew up cuts made during surgery comment: catgut is slowly dissolved by fluids in the body after the wound has healed and therefore does not need to be removed. ordinary catgut will dissolve in five to ten days; hardened catgut takes up to three or four weeks.
