Toggle

  1. A relatively new feature in some credit agreements which, at the discretion of the borrower, allows the borrower to switch periodically back and forth the payment of interest due on certain tiers of its debt capital between cash pay and pik.

A strong pin of wood, sometimes used instead of a hook in fixing a tackle, or it is put through the bight or eye of a rope, bolt, or block-strop, to keep it in its place. in ships of war it is usual to fix toggles upon the running parts of the topsail-sheets, the jears, &c., when preparing for action, so that if the rope is shot away below, the toggle may stop the yard from coming down. the toggle is used in masting operations, in securing the standing part of fore and main sheets, but especially in whaling operations, cutting in, flensing, &c., a hole is cut in the blubber, the eye of the purchase strop passed through and toggled. in cold weather especially it is preferred to the hook, which at low temperatures is apt to snap suddenly, and is, moreover, heavier to handle. the term is also used for putting the bights of the sheets in the beckets.   4. A wooden or metal pin attached to a line 327 toggle and used to connect items which need to be easily released. typically used on signal flags, lifebuoys, and (in ornamental form) on duffle coats.

  1. To surrender at discretion, implies an unconditional yielding to the mercy of the conquerors.

  2. Within the gips standards, discretion is the management company's ability to execute transactions and to make decisions regarding the vehicle's investments on behalf of the investors without their prior approval. there are degrees of discretion. however not all investor imposed restrictions or investor approval rights will necessarily cause a portfolio to be non-discretionary. gips describes a discretionary portfolio as one for which the investors have not imposed restrictions or requirements that impede the manager from fully executing the defined and approved strategy. 

  3. Freedom given to the floor broker by an investor to use his judgment regarding the execution of an order. discretion can be limited, as in the case of a limit order that gives the floor broker some distance from the stated limit price to use his judgment in executing the order. discretion can also be unlimited, as in the case of a market-not-held order. see also: market not held order.
