  1. An ornamental frame or shelter, under which the ship`s bell is suspended.

  2. A protective canopy over a ship’s bell. bell-bottoms: wide trousers flared from the knee down to enable seamen to roll them up when swabbing decks or doing other wet jobs. this was not the original purpose; in the days when sailors tailored their own clothes they made the trouser legs wide all the way down, so as not to waste any of the cloth they had bought. only later was the utility of a flare discovered.
