Jolly roger
Глоссарий морской лексики и терминологии (английский язык) |
- A pirate`s flag; a white skull in a black field.
- Slang for the pirate ensign. popularly understood to be a black flag with white crossed bones surmounted by a death’s head, this version was only occasionally used. in practice, each buccaneer wanted a distinct personal emblem, so there were numerous variations, almost invariably on black or scarlet grounds, adorned with multiple skulls, jawless skulls, complete skeletons, hourglasses, cutlasses, spears, and other weapons. (during the golden age of piracy, “roger” referred to a rogue or scoundrel.)
