To slacken the rope heaved round upon its barrel, to prevent its parts from riding or getting foul.

Surface current, английский
  1. A current which does not extend more than 8 or 10 feet below the surface. also, fresh water running over salt at the mouths of great rivers.

  2. Oceanic surface currents are of 315 surface great importance to mariners. some are large and permanent, others local and transient. they can be defined as horizontal movement in the upper 220 fathoms (400 meters, 1320 feet), which represents somewhat less than 10 percent of all the water in the oceans. solar heat and wind are the primary forces that start surface water moving. secondary forces such as gravity and terrestrial rotation then determine which way the currents will flow. the sun is most powerful at the equator, where its heat causes surface water to expand and rise about eight centimeters (3 inches) above the levels in temperate latitudes. influenced by gravity, equatorial surface water tends to flow down this slight slope in both directions towards the north and south polar regions. solar heat also affects the tropical atmosphere, creating winds which flow in the same north and south directions as the currents. blowing across the air-ocean interface they create friction which tends to push the surface water into another small “hill” down which gravity pulls the water poleward. at this point coriolis effect clicks in to amplify the movement. in the northern hemisphere the larger surface currents are constrained by land masses which force them into virtually closed rotational systems known as a gyres. these do not develop in the southern hemisphere due to lack of bordering continents. see also subtropical surface currents, polar surface currents, and oceanic circulation. surface deployment & distribution command: a u.s. army unit that is the dod’s worldwide port manager and organizes global movement of military personnel and cargo. formerly called military traffic management command.
