Footnote reading, английский
“james bartley—1870–1909. a modern jonah.” this story was headlined in newspapers and found its way into numerous other publications, both secular and religious, the latter including serious bible commentaries on the jonah story. but did it really happen? sperm whales are certainly capable of swallowing a human being because they gulp their prey whole. in 1955 a 405-pound squid was removed intact from the belly of one and on another occasion a sixteen foot long shark was found. edward b. davis, a professor at messiah college in grantham, pennsylvania, decided to check it out. he extensively researched the story and summarized his findings in an 1891 article in “the american scientific affiliation.” records showed that star of the east, british registry, john b. killam, master, set sail from new zealand in december 1890 and arrived at new york in april 1891, so she could have been near the falklands in february. but otherwise, he found no credible evidence to support the story. the ship was not a whaler, and no james bartley was on the crew list. moreover, no london hospital was able to confirm reports that any patient had been treated for the effect of gastric juices on his skin. the final and most damaging evidence was provided by captain killam’s widow who, in a letter, published in 1907 in the expository times, said: there is not one word of truth to the whale story. i was with my husband all the years he was in the star of the east. there was never a man lost overboard while my husband was with her. that sailor has told a great sea yarn.
