This design was used by the indigenous indians and later developed into a family of vessels that included the bugeye and skipjack. it was built of five 30–40 foot (9–12 m) logs hand hewn into a dugout with a fixed bowsprit, raked mast, and narrow open deck.

On 22nd june 1807, hms leopard intercepted uss chesapeake, forced her to heave to by firing across her bow, then boarded, and seized four seamen, claimed to be deserters from the royal navy. the incident was one of the factors contributing to the war of 1812.
