Coxswain/cockswain

Морской словарь
This is another ancient title, referring to the sailor who takes charge of a ship’s boat and its crew, and usually handles its steering. the word is a combination of the anglo-saxon cok meaning a small boat with swain meaning husband. it is pronounced “cox’n.” in both usn and rn, coxswain still carries its original meaning and refers especially to the sailor commanding a captain’s gig or admiral’s barge. in the rn, it is also the rating of the senior petty officer on board a submarine or a small ship (such as a corvette), who performs as the vessel’s quartermaster and assumes disciplinary duties that are performed by the master-at-arms and chief boatswain’s mate in larger ships.
