Deck landing modes, английский
The most demanding task facing a naval aviator is landing on an aircraft carrier in anything but the smoothest seas. landing on a stationary runway is hard enough. added to that task are the pitching and rolling motions of the ship, the vortex of air caused by the island, and the need to position the tailhook accurately on the third arresting wire. no wonder a deck landing has been compared to a “controlled crash.” there are six ways in which a pilot can land on a flight deck, three conventional and three electronic “modes”: • unassisted: without any guidance, deck landing is difficult and hazardous even for experienced fliers, and theoretically suicidal for neophytes—although land-based military pilots flying aircraft without tailhooks have occasionally succeeded during calm weather. • with a batsman: this tried and true method (see landing signal officer) was employed from the 1920s until the advent of jet aircraft whose high landing speeds made human reaction capacity too slow. • with a mirror aid: the approach is semi-automated, but still depends on skill and observation. moreover, since the pilot is watching the meatball rather than the deck, the solid thump of every landing is a surprise. today’s naval air traffic controllers guide aircraft onto the deck relying on electronic technology: 93 deck • in mode i, a radar-controlled precision approach landing system takes over to provide a hands-off touch down. pilots have an aversion to relinquishing their controls to a computer, but automatic carrier landing systems are important when all other methods fail. • in a mode ii approach, pilots approach using a crosshair display, and get confirmation of their readings from the carrier air traffic control center computer. • mode iii, involves an air traffic controller or landing signal officer “talking down” the pilot, by providing him or her with precise instructions for a safe landing.

Deck engineer, английский
The member of a merchantman’s crew responsible for the maintenance and repair of deck machinery such as capstans and winches.
