George ensign

Морской словарь
Usn slang for the most junior ensign on board a warship. reputed to be derived from jorg = junior officer requiring guidance (cf. bull ensign).

Ensign, английский
  1. A nautical version of the national flag of a country usually flown at the stern. -the rank of a officer equivalent to that of midshipman.

  2. 1. ensign, the principal flag or banner flown by a ship to indicate her nationality.

  3. [from the anglo-saxon segn.] a large flag or banner, hoisted on a long pole erected over the stern, and called the ensign-staff. it is used to distinguish the ships of different nations from each other, as also to characterize the different squadrons of the navy; it was formerly written ancient. ensign is in the army the title of the junior rank of subaltern officers of infantry; from amongst them are detailed the officers who carry the colours.

  4. [1] the flag denoting nationality (cf. colors). [2] the lowest commissioned rank in a british guards regiment. [3] the lowest commissioned rank in the united states and royal new zealand navies. essentially, a naval ensign is an on-the-job apprentice, similar to and ranking with a midshipman in the british navy, or an acting sub-lieutenant in the australian and canadian navies (although none of these is commissioned). in the usn, the most junior ensign on board is colloquially called the george ensign (from jorg = junior officer requiring guidance), while the most senior is the bull ensign (reputedly after admiral “bull” halsey who assigned specific duties to that officer).
