Ghostswimmer

Морской словарь
A sophisticated biomimetic submarine robot or uav (underwater autonomous vehicle) developed for the u.s. navy in 2008 and expected to be deployed in 2009. based on the tuna fish, its mechanism includes a spine with vertebrae and synthetic muscles that drive fins and a tail, turning waves of body motion into propulsion, just as those components perform the same task for the real fish. the tuna was chosen because its family (scombridae) varies in length from 100 cms (blackfin) to 450 cms (northern bluefin), indicating hydrodynamic design adaptable to a wide range of sizes, and so efficient that it allows tuna to make trans-oceanic migrations at speeds of up to 70 km/h. the system is expected to use less power than conventional propeller-drive, to have approximately three times the endurance, and to be relatively silent and stealthy. the tuna-like size and shape of prototypes will allow them to blend into the underwater background, making them perfect for intelligence- gathering. if these small versions perform as expected, the navy hopes to adapt the concept for full-size submarines.
