    An explosive device in a watertight container, floating on, or moored below the surface of the water, or lying on the sea bed. designed to detonate when a hostile vessel strikes it, generates a pressure wave, or exerts acoustic or magnetic influence on it. mines can be deployed [1] offensively, to divert or destroy hostile shipping. [3] defensively, to protect friendly ports or routes, or [4] psychologically, to inhibit enemy use of trade routes. the first recorded mention of naval mining was by 14th century chinese artillery officer jiao yu, whose early examples consisted of explosives enclosed in putty-sealed wooden boxes, equipped with time fuses, or rip cords pulled by a concealed ambusher. an american, david bushnell invented the first practical western mine for use against the british during the war of independence. it was a watertight keg filled with gunpowder that was floated toward the enemy and detonated by a percussion lock if it struck a ship.     A former usn enlisted person (usually a cwo, cpo, or po1) who has earned a commission through superior performance, but is limited to duties in his or her field of expertise. “limited” refers not to authority, but rather career progression and restrictions. ldos qualify for the full range of promotions up to rear admiral (lower half ) but, unlike unrestricted line officers, cannot normally aspire to command a warship or auxiliary vessel, although such appointments have occasionally been made.
