Marie celeste
Морской словарь |
A decade after the mary celeste incident, in 1883, arthur conan doyle, then a struggling writer who had not yet invented sherlock holmes, turned that minor maritime disaster into an enduring supernatural mystery with his short story, written under a pseudonym and entitled “j. habakuk jephson’s statement.” the fictional vessel, which he called marie celeste, was taken over by mutineers, who murdered all on board and sailed the ship to africa. doyle’s vivid account, written as if it were an eyewitness report, somehow became confused with that of the genuine mary celeste, and the story grew into an enduring maritime legend, at various times incorporating mysterious bloodstains, half-eaten meals, piracy, submarine attack, monsters from the deep, ravening sharks, alien abduction, and even disappearance through time travel.

Marine aviation, английский
Officers of the united states marine corps began to train with naval aviators in 1912, and two years later established a separate section within the navy flying school. but in 1915 the commandant authorized the creation of an independent “aviation company,” making the united states the only seapower to have a dedicated marine air arm (other nations have marine airmen, but they fly as part of naval aviation). in accordance with the tradition “every man a rifleman,” enlisted aviation personnel are trained in infantry combat, and all officers are qualified platoon commanders. the corps operates both rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft that provide transport capability as well as close air support to its ground forces. officers of the royal marines fly with the fleet air arm, but do not have a separate organization.
