[3] royal navy signalmen are taught that, if a flag officer unexpectedly comes on board, they can cut off the fly and use the hoist portion in lieu of a personal flag, leaving it plain for an admiral and painting on balls for vice or rear admirals if required. [4] an old navigator’s joke holds that hoisting the church pendant over the interrogative flag can be used to say, blasphemously, “jesus christ, where am i.”
