Sideboys, английский
This term applies to members of a warship’s crew (of any age or sex) who line up at the gangway as a mark of respect for a senior officer or distinguished visitor coming aboard or disembarking (see piping the side). the number of sideboys is always even—junior officers are entitled to two, commanders and captains four, rear admirals six, vice admirals and above eight. • in the royal navy, the ceremony is invoked only for heads of state, naval or marine officers when in uniform, and foreign naval officers in uniform. no military, consular, or civil dignitaries are so honored, nor are naval officers in plain clothes. • the united states navy, has extended the courtesy to military, diplomatic, and consular officers, and to certain members of the legislative and executive branches of government. those entitled to three or four ruffles and flourishes get eight sideboys, others six. when a marine detachment is embarked and involved in side ceremonies, it assembles separately from the sideboys (see side honors and rainbow sideboys).
