Underdog
Морской словарь |
- This term—now referring to a person who is disadvantaged, or not expected to win—originated in a trade with close maritime connections. during the 17th through 19th centuries, shipbuilding was a major user of planking, which was cut from wooden logs by a two-man team using a long double- handled “whipsaw.” the logs were secured above the “sawpit,” by fanged metal supports called “dogs.” the senior (or top) sawyer stood on the log to guide the cut, while the bottom sawyer clambered down into the pit to provide musclepower, often standing in ice-cold water and choking on a constant shower of sawdust. in sawpit jargon, they were known as “top dog” and “underdog.” (this derivation is challenged by the dog-fighting fraternity, which claims the terms for itself.)
