Meritorious unit commendation, английский
Each u.s. military service issues its own version of this award. the naval version, established in 1967, is given for valorous or meritorious achievement in battle or non-combat operations at a level that would justify the award of a bronze star to an individual. naval units awarded an muc are authorized to fly a red, yellow, blue, and green striped pennant, up to five bronze stars being placed on the central red stripe for additional citations. those who were on board and actually participated in the action are entitled to wear the muc medal. mermaids:mysterious female sea creatures are featured in the oral traditions of almost every culture, one of the earliest being the assyrian goddess atargatis, who is sometimes depicted as having the body of a fish with a human head and legs. more frequently she has the conventional mermaid form of human above, fish below, which is exactly how the phoenecian derketo is described. the 14th century french melusine is sometimes said to have bifurcated twin fish tails below a female torso. mediterranean 198 the sirens of classical greece—part woman, part bird—sang so sweetly that sailors forgot their native lands and families, landing to waste away on the sirens’ island, which grew white with their bleaching bones. the mythical lorelei of the rhine river, whose beautiful song lured mariners onto her “fateful rock,” was a typical blonde-haired, blue-eyed madchen with no bird or fish-like features. neither of these water spirits really fits the mermaid image. reports of mermaid sightings by european explorers and navigators were common, widespread, and amazingly consistent, describing creatures with the tail of a fish or porpoise and the head and torso of a naked young woman. their hair was variously reported as golden, green, or jet black, but invariably said to be waist-length and brilliant. beyond the physical similarity of “eyewitness” reports there were huge differences. many called them beautiful, but others recorded disappointment at their ugliness. “mer-myths” (if we may call them such) include tales of compassionate mermaids who rescued drowning seamen and deposited them gently ashore; of frivolous mermaids who gamboled around a ship like playful dolphins; and of amorous mermaids who snatched watchkeepers off the deck at night, carrying them to be sex slaves in deep underwater grottoes. sometimes, it was said, a mermaid would fall deeply in love with a mortal man, leaving her watery home to adopt human form, marry him, and bear his children, but the day usually came when she heard the ocean’s call and slipped away never to return. there were also stories of malicious mermaids, with siren-like powers to lure seafarers to their deaths; of mermaid seers, who could foretell the future, and mer-witches who could control it. early european mariners believed that the sight of a mermaid’s breast could calm angry seas, while ancient japanese legend held that eating the flesh of a mermaid would result in immortality and eternal youth.
