- [1] the most famous of confederate raiders was css alabama, one of three warships built secretly in england. she sank, burned, or captured sixty-four union merchantmen and whalers before being sunk by uss kearsage outside cherbourg, france, on 19 june 1864. after the civil war, britain had to pay $15-million compensation for the damage inflicted by english-built confederate raiders, the settlement being known as “the alabama claims.” [2] uss alabama was the battleship that led the u.s. fleet into tokyo bay to receive the japanese surrender in 1945. decommissioned in 1947, she is now the centerpiece of battleship memorial park in mobile bay.
