  2. A transformer that steps up the voltage in a florescent lamp.

  3. Балласт

  4. Heavy weight, often sea water, necessary for the stability and safety of a ship which is not carrying cargo

  5. Heavy material that is placed in the hold of a vessel to provide stability. (see also in ballast.)

  6. Heavy substances loaded by a vessel to improve stability, trimming, sea-keeping and to increase the immersion at the propeller. sea water ballast is commonly loaded in most vessels in ballast tanks, positioned in compartments right at the bottom and in some cases on the sides, called wing tanks. on a tanker, ballast is seawater that is taken into the cargo tanks to submerge the vessel to a proper trim.

  7. Heavy substances loaded by a vessel to improve stability, trimming, sea-keeping and to increase the immersion at the propeller. sea water ballast is commonly` loaded in most vessels in ballast tanks, positioned in compartments right at the bottom and in some cases on the sides, called wing tanks. on a tanker, ballast is seawater that is taken into the cargo tanks to submerge the vessel to a proper trim.

  8. A device used to start and operate discharge lamps. it may include a dimmer.

  9. Балласт, щебель, балластное сопротивление

  10. Weight in the keel of a boat that provides stability.

  11. A certain portion of stone, pig-iron, gravel, water, or such like materials, deposited in a ship`s hold when she either has no cargo or too little to bring her sufficiently low in the water. it is used to counter-balance the effect of the wind upon the masts, and give the ship a proper stability, that she may be enabled to carry sail without danger of overturning. the art of ballasting consists in placing the centre of gravity, so as neither to be too high nor too low, too far forward nor too far aft, and that the surface of the water may nearly rise to the extreme breadth amidships, and thus the ship will be enabled to carry a good sail, incline but little, and ply well to windward. a want of true knowledge in this department has led to putting too great a weight in ships` bottoms, which impedes their sailing and endangers their masts by excessive rolling, the consequence of bringing the centre of gravity too low. it should be trimmed with due regard to the capacity, gravity, and flooring, and to the nature of whatever is to be deposited thereon. (see trim.)

  12. As a verb, signifies to steady;—as a substantive, a comprehensive mind. a man is said to “lose his ballast” when his judgment fails him, or he becomes top-heavy

  13. [1] heavy material such as gravel or pig iron stowed low in a ship to improve its stability. [2] water or other liquid used for the same purpose (see ballast bag, ballast tank). [3] to ballast a merchantman requires disposing the ballast so that the ship will maintain her proper equilibrium, and be neither too stiff nor too crank. it is not merely the weight of ballast which has to be considered, but also its distribution relative to the weight and distribution of cargo. [4] in a man-of-war the ballast is permanent, and arranged to balance the guns and other top-weights carried.

  14. Балласт (1. груз 2. слой из сыпучих материалов)

  15. Pertains to monohulls. weight at the bottom of the boat to help keep it stable. ballast can be placed inside the hull of the boat or externally on a keel.

  16. The material most commonly used to form the road bed of a railway track. it is laid on the base formation of the track with the track laid on top of it and provides a storm water drainage medium. it usually consists of granite, whinstone or furnace slag. ash is sometimes used in yards but not where any sort of speed is required as the dust gets into the rolling stock equipment. a properly maintained railway will have regular tamping of ballast to ensure the track itself is maintained to provide an acceptable standard of ride. other track forms include slab or non-ballasted track which does not require ballast.

  17. Graded stone sub-base used for drainage and support of the track. the advantage is that it is easy to move for maintenance work.
