- The index or indicator of an instrument.—station pointer. a brass graduated circle with one fixed and two radial legs; by placing them at two adjoining angles taken by a sextant between three known objects, the position of the observer is fixed on the chart.
- One of the pair of gunners who work as a team, the pointer (also known as layer) controls elevation and hence the range of shot (see also trainer).

- A graphical image displayed on the screen that indicates the location of a pointing device.
- A needle, marker, or bar that indicates a single value displayed against a scale on a report.
- An on-screen element whose location changes as the user moves the mouse. depending on the location of the mouse pointer and the operation of the program with which it is working, the area of the screen where the mouse pointer appears serves as the target for an action when the user presses one of the mouse buttons.

- A term used to describe a sensor (or sensors), the associated transducer(s), and the data read-out or recording device.
