    Donkey, английский
    1. Also known as a yarder (22).

    2. A small engine used for hoisting or hauling. donkey’s breakfast: seaman’s slang for the straw which formerly stuffed the mattresses of those who had beds instead of hammocks. don’t give up the ship: on june 1, 1813, two 38- gun frigates met in a duel off boston. in size, tonnage, and armament the ships were evenly matched, so the outcome depended on morale, experience, and training, where there were marked differences. • sir philip bowes vere broke had been in command of hms shannon for over six years, during which he had obsessively trained his gun captains and crews to fire individually as their weapons came to bear—some being detailed to aim at the enemy’s helm and quarterdeck to destroy command and control, others at its gunports to inflict maximum damage on offensive capability. confidence was high, and the british crew was anxious to come to grips with the americans. • in contrast, james lawrence, who had recently been promoted to captain, had just taken command of uss chesapeake, a ship with a bad luck reputation, and a surly rag-tag crew who did not know their captain and had not had time to train together as a team. some even staged a minor mutiny, refusing to man the guns until the purser issued chits for prize money they claimed was owing to them. in the first exchange of fire, virtually everyone on chesapeake’s quarterdeck was killed or wounded, including the captain, his executive officer, the lieutenant of marines, three midshipmen, and both helmsmen. lawrence’s wounds were mortal but, as he was being carried below, he shouted defiantly “tell the men to fire faster and not to give up the ship; fight her until she sinks ... (or) blow her up.” brave words were not enough. within 15 minutes, half of chesapeake’s crew and every one of her officers had been killed or wounded. the butcher bill was exceptionally high, probably because chesapeake’s upperworks had been built of easily-splintered pine when more shotresistant oak was not available. despite defeat and death, lawrence entered the immortal pantheon of naval heroes since his dying order became the unofficial motto of the united states navy. don’t spoil the ship: see spoil the ship.
