- A naval job rating. signalmen (who sick 292 may be female despite the title) stand watches on signal bridges to send and receive messages by signal lamp, semaphore, and flag hoist. they prepare and encode or decode headings and addresses, render passing honors to ships and boats, display ensigns and personal flags during salutes and colors, repair signal flags, pennants and ensigns, and perform as lookouts. as navigator’s assistants, they take bearings, and recognize visual navigational aids. both rn and usn have phased out this rating, with visual signaling transferred to a quartermaster.
- Uk term for person employed to operate or supervise the control of signals. traditionally housed in a signal box, more recently a control room, where the signalling levers or controls are located. politically correct grade now identified as "signaller" by network rail. not to be confused with the same term used in the us for a signal maintenance person.
