- A tournament or bracket in which every player plays every other player
- Today, this term refers to a method of scheduling sports tournaments so that each contestant plays all of the others before being disqualified. it is also a method of computer programming in which each process is given a “time-slice” in sequence. however, the term first appears in english in 1546. its meaning then is unknown, but by the 17th century it seems to have applied to a certain type or category of person. the meaning changed again in 1731, when discontented royal navy seamen went beyond making “rough music” to submit a petition of grievances. because of the danger that the first to sign such a remonstrance would be accused of being the ringleader and guilty of counseling mutiny (a capital offense), they adopted an earlier french practice called ruban rond, meaning “round ribbon.” this involved signing their names like the spokes of a wheel radiating from its hub.
