- A device which converts fluid power into linear mechanical force and motion. it usually consists of a moveable element such as a piston and piston rod, plunger rod, plunger or ram, operating with in a cylindrical bore.

(also see printing, roller printing.) 3. a slotted cylindrical housing for the needles in a circular-knitting machine. the number of slots per inch in the cylinder determines the cut of the machine. 4. see drying cylinders.
