Charlie noble, английский
This mariner’s nickname for the galley funnel undoubtedly refers to a real person who was fanatical about keeping the brass or copper stovepipe brilliantly polished. unfortunately it’s not absolutely certain who that was and, confusingly, the name is sometimes spelt charley nobel. uncertainty is increased because he has been “positively identified” as being both british and american; in merchant and in naval service; and as cook, mate, and master. despite these ambiguities, the most likely candidate seems captain charles noble who served in the british merchant service during the 1850s.
