- A four-sided fore-and-aft sail supported by a spar along the top that is fixed to the mast at a point some distance from the center of the spar. see lugger.
- A quadrilateral fore-and-aft sail tied to and hoisted from a yard, usually suspended about onethird of the way along its length.

Fife rail, английский
- A freestanding pinrail surrounding the base of a mast and used for securing that mast`s sails` halyards with a series of belaying pins.
- A rail with holes for belaying pins, usually at the base of a mast. fifer & fiddler: these were sailing navy musicians, rated as petty officers, who played to encourage manual labor at the capstan, and when hoisting, warping, or heaving (see chanteys).

- A fortress or castle in or near a city, intended to keep the inhabitants in subjugation, or, in case of a siege, to supply a final refuge.
- A fortified work of superior strength, and dominating everything else, generally separated therefrom by an open space of glacis or esplanade; often useful against domestic as well as foreign enemies.
