- A small piece cut from a larger piece, member, etc., to make it more uniform or for symmetry.
- Among other things, rough set theory is concerned with reducing the number of attributes in an information table (database) by finding redundant attributes. a set of attributes x that define the same indiscernability relations (equivalence classes) as a larger set of attributes y is a reduct of the original set. when the reduct is the smallest possible reduct for a set of attributes, it is called a minimal reduct. note that neither the reduct nor the minimal reduct of y is unique. an attribute that is in all reducts is in the core. see also: core, indiscernable, rough set theory.
