The minute fluctuations in atmospheric pressure which accompany the passage of a sound wave and give rise to the sensation of hearing; usually expressed in dynes per square centimeter or newtons per square meter. sound-pressure level the level, 4 of sound pressure; equal to 10 times the logarithm of the sound pressure squared and averaged over a period of time, the reference pressure being 0.0002 dyne per sq cm (2 ? 10?5 newton per sq m); expressed in decibels (abbr. db).
