Dry hydrate. 2. quick lime mixed with water, on the job, to form a lime putty; slaked lime. hydration 1. the formation of a compound by combining water with some other substance. 2. in concrete, the chemical reaction between cement and water. 3. the chemical reaction by which a substance (such as portland cement or plaster) combines with water, giving off heat to form a crystalline structure in its setting and hardening. hydraulically designed (sprinkler) system a sprinkler system in which the pipe sizes are calculated on the basis of the pressure loss to provide a prescribed number of gallons of water per square foot (liters per minute per square meter) of floor area, or flow per sprinkler, with a reasonable degree of uniformity over the area.
