- Arterial blood pressure that is higher than the usual range for gender and age. also called high blood pressure, hyperpiesia. compare hypotension comment: hypertension is without a specific cause in more than 50% of cases (essential hypertension) but may be associated with other diseases. it is treated with drugs such as beta blockers, ace inhibitors, diuretics and calcium channel blockers.
