Tropical rotating windstorm, английский
A destructive circular storm that forms over tropical waters during late summer and autumn, and is very different from extratropical storms that form in winter, even though both are associated with powerful winds and drenching rain. eight characteristics define a tropical cyclone (as such storms are generically known): • it has no front • it forms under weak high-altitude winds • its winds lessen with height • its center is warmer than its surroundings • air sinks at its center • its main energy source is the latent heat of condensation • it rotates inward towards an area of low-pressure known as the eye • it weakens rapidly over land formation begins when thunderstorms drift overhead, while warm air from the ocean surface begins rising, creating a column of low pressure. trade winds blowing in opposing directions then cause this rising column to start spinning. thanks to coriolis effect the rotation is clockwise in the southern hemisphere and counter-clockwise in the northern. as the spiral moves over the surface, the low pressure around the eye sucks in more and more warm damp air while, at the same time, cooler dryer air is sucked downward. if they last long enough, these conditions feed the cyclone so that it grows to produce violent winds, massive waves, and torrential rains. (see dvorak technique.) when sustained maximum surface winds are less than 17 meters/second (33 knots, 38 mph, 61 km/hr) the disturbance is called a tropical depression; when winds exceed this speed it becomes a tropical storm and is usually assigned a name. at 33 meters/second (64 knots, 74 mph, 119 km/hr) it is fully-fledged but, confusingly, no standard nomenclature has emerged so meteorologists have given it different names in discrete regions, even changing name within the confines of a single ocean. cyclonic tropical storms which are otherwise identical are called: • hurricanes—in the north atlantic, the north pacific (e of the dateline), and the south pacific (w of 160°e). • typhoons—in the north pacific (w of the dateline). • severe tropical cyclones—in the south pacific (w of 160°e) and the south indian ocean (e of 90°e). • tropical cyclones—in the south indian ocean (w of 90°w). • severe cyclonic storms—in the north indian ocean. there is general agreement that winds reach “hurricane strength” when their speeds exceed 33 meters/ second, but these storms can go considerably faster (see tables 1–6). in consequence, they are extremely dangerous maritime hazards and, when they move onto land, can cause extensive damage due to high winds, heavy waves, severe flooding, and especially storm surge.
