One of a group of viruses which cause herpes and chickenpox (herpesvirus type i), and genital herpes (herpesvirus type ii) comment: because the same virus causes herpes and chickenpox, anyone who has had chickenpox as a child carries the dormant herpesvirus in his or her bloodstream and can develop shingles in later life. it is not known what triggers the development of shingles, though it is known that an adult suffering from shingles can infect a child with chickenpox.
