- In wood, marble, etc., usually a minor appearance defect that does not necessarily affect durability or strength.
- Blemishes are often seen on diamond surfaces. these external characteristics include abrasions, nicks, extra facets, polish marks, naturals, and scratches. many are not visible to the naked or untrained eye.
- Term used in the gia clarity-grading system for any nick, scratch, abrasion, pit, polish mark, graining or polish line on the surface of a polished diamond.
