- Time aboard ship is measured by the striking of a bell every thirty minutes. this practice originated in the 13th century, when the ship’s boy kept time by turning a half-hour sand-glass. each time the sand ran out and he turned the glass over he would yell “first turn,” “second turn,” and so on until “eighth turn” indicated the end of the watch. because young voices did not always carry well, it became customary for him to strike the ship’s bell to indicate the number of turns he had made. the watch ended with eight bells and the next boy started the cycle again. the number is still shouted out as well as rung and, unless there has been a significant untoward incident to report, it is traditional to signify the end of the watch with the call “eight bells and all’s well.” see also bells, nautical day, and watchkeeping.
