Beak, o

Глоссарий морской лексики и терминологии (английский язык)
Beak-head. a piece of brass like a beak, fixed at the head of the ancient galleys, with which they pierced their enemies. pis?us is said to have first added the rostrum or beak-head. later it was a small platform at the fore part of the upper deck, but the term is now applied to that part without the ship before the forecastle, or knee of the head, which is fastened to the stem and is supported by the main knee. latterly, to meet steam propulsion, the whole of this is enlarged, strengthened, and armed with iron plates, and thus the armed stem revives the ancient strategy in sea-fights. shakspeare makes ariel thus allude to the beak in the “tempest:”—

Forecastle, английский
  1. A partial deck, above the upper deck and at the head of the vessel; traditionally the sailors` living quarters. pronounced /?fo?ks?l/. the name is derived from the castle fitted to bear archers in time of war.

  3. Бак, баковая надстройка корабля, носовой кубрик

  4. Once a short deck placed in the fore-part of a ship above the upper deck; it was usually terminated, both before and behind, in vessels of war by a breast-work, the foremost part forming the top of the beak-head, and the hind part, of the fore-chains. it is now applied in men-of-war to that part of the upper deck forward of the after fore-shroud, or main-tack block, and which is flush with the quarter-deck and gangways. also, a forward part of a merchantman under the deck, where the seamen live on a platform. some vessels have a short raised deck forward, which is called a top-gallant forecastle ; it extends from the bow to abaft the fore-mast, which it includes.

  5. (pronounced foak-sel) [1] a deck above the forward end of the main deck. [2] formerly, crew accommodation below that deck. [3] the term now applies to the berths for deck crews wherever they may be located. often abbreviated fo’c’sle.

Propulsion, английский
  1. (реактивное) движение; силовая [двигательная] установка; двигатель

  2. Cредства движения; движение

  3. Marine propulsion is the act of moving an object through the water or across its surface. poles, paddles, and oars were the earliest forms, while sails represented the most significant historical method. today, common types are underwater propeller, water-jet, paddle wheel and, experimentally, magnetohydrodynamic drive.
