Atlantic air gap

Морской словарь
That area too distant from north america, iceland, or great britain to be covered by air support during the battle of the atlantic (1939–1945). there, german u-boats enjoyed freedom of surface movement and assembled in extremely large wolfpacks that overwhelmed convoy escorts. despite desperate pleas from the admiralty, the royal air force consistently refused to divert long range aviation from strategic bombing to convoy protection. shipping losses in the gap, which had been heavy at all times, became cripplingly so during the winter of 1942–43, leading the raf to finally provide suitable aircraft. more importantly, escort carriers began to be deployed in hunter-killer groups and, by 1944, virtually every convoy enjoyed air cover.

Atlantic (battle), английский
The battle of the atlantic lasted throughout the european phase of world war ii, from the fall of 1939 to the spring of 1945. there were a few surface actions, but it was essentially a contest between allied antisubmarine forces and german uboats attempting to sink the ships on which britain’s survival and the eventual liberation of nazi occupied europe depended. after the fall of france, advance bases on the atlantic coast allowed the u-boats to penetrate deeper into the atlantic air gap and mount highly effective night attacks by surfaced wolfpacks. a series of convoy battles in march 1943 turned the tide, but the u-boats were only contained and were still at sea when the war ended. they had sunk 2,753 merchantmen totalling 14.6 million gross tons, plus about 90 warships, but 733 submarines—about twothirds of the total—had been destroyed.
