Coils of chain attached to a new vessel’s hull so as to slow it down when being launched into a narrow waterway where it might create dangerous waves or even strike the opposite bank. drake’s drum: legend has it that in 1596, when he was dying of yellow fever in the caribbean, sir francis drake prophesized that if ever england was in serious danger the drum, carried aboard his ship to summon the crew to quarters, would miraculously beat spontaneously to awaken englishmen to defend their country. in 1897, the poet sir henry newbolt turned drake’s prophesy into a patriotic song: take my drum to england, hang it by the shore strike it when your powder’s running low if the dons sight devon, i’ll quit the port of heaven and drum them up the channel as we drummed them long ago. drake he’s in his hammock till the great armadas come (cap’n art thou sleepin’ there below?) slung a’tween the round shot, a’listenin’ for the drum and dreamin’ all the time of plymouth hoe. the music was played on the “great armada” of allied warships which sailed from plymouth to the d-day invasion of normandy on 6 june 1944.
