Electromagnetic railgun, английский
This emerging technology uses high power electromagnetic energy instead of chemical propellants to propel a projectile farther and faster than conventional artillery. two parallel metallic rails are connected to a power supply. when a conductive projectile is placed on them, it completes the circuit, creating a magnetic field which accelerates the projectile along the rails. no explosives are required to fire the weapon and, since the high-velocity projectiles destroy targets by kinetic energy, no explosive rounds need to be stored in the ship’s magazine. a successful experimental firing was conducted at the united states naval surface warfare center, dahlgren, virginia, on january 31, 2008. electronic chart display and information system: a specific form of shipborne computer-based navigation information system that complies with international maritime organization regulations and can be used in lieu of paper navigation charts in some areas. a true ecdis displays information from electronic navigational charts and integrates position information from the global positioning system and other navigational sensors, such as radar, fathometer and automatic identification systems. it may also display additional navigation-related information, such as sailing directions. the term is often incorrectly used to refer to non–imo-compliant types of electronic chart display (cf. raster chart display system).
