Gyres

Морской словарь
Large ocean currents are constrained by the continental masses that border oceanic basins. these force them into almost-closed, circular or spiral patterns called gyres. each basin has a large gyre at approximately 30° north and south latitude, driven by the atmospheric flow produced by subtropical high pressure systems. smaller gyres occur in the north atlantic and pacific oceans centered at 50° north, propelled by the circulation due to polar low pressure centers (pronounced jire). see also surface currents, deep ocean currents, and oceanic circulation.
