Ropes, cables, or springs used to make a vessel fast to a wharf. mooring lines (also called docking lines) are defined by their function and position: • bow lines (not to be confused with bowlines) lead forward from the bow. • stern lines are led aft from the stern. • springs are led forward or aft from a point on the hull, ending ahead of stern lines and abaft of bow lines. together, they prevent the ship from drifting ahead or astern. • breast lines run directly to the shore at right angles to the keel and, assisted by the springs, stop outward movement away from the dock.
