Occurs when a vessel’s center of gravity coincides with its metacenter, meaning that the vessel will not return to the upright after being inclined. nelson’s blood: on 21st october 1805, off cape trafalgar, british vice-admiral horatio viscount nelson with 27 ships of the line engaged contre-amiral pierre charles jean baptiste sylvestre de villeneuve with a combined franco-spanish fleet of 33. the british sank or captured 17 of the enemy, losing no ships of their own, but nelson was mortally wounded by a sharpshooter’s bullet, dying shortly after victory was declared. his body was placed in a large cask filled with rum or brandy to preserve it on the long passage back to england; but on arrival the barrel was almost empty and its lid had blown open due to the gases of putrefaction. this may have been due to leakage; but legend has it that victory’s crew had drilled a small hole so that they could “suck the monkey” and enjoy the liquor. this is highly unlikely, since any sailor who desecrated the beloved hero’s remains would have been lynched by the rest of the crew. however, whether the story is true or apocryphal, an alcoholic who would indiscriminately drink anything was known throughout the 19th century as one who would even “tap the admiral.” that derogatory term is now obsolete, but navy-issue rum was called nelson’s blood until its issue was discontinued in 1970.
